The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Research Associate on behalf of International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) to provide technical research support in implementation of breeding experiments, surveys and other research studies that are aimed at increasing the genetic gains of rice in Kenya. The person will also help in data collection from breeding trials, day to day management of field trials and help in supervision of casual laborers.
ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centres dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa. www.ilri.org
ILRI hosts the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in Nairobi (www.irri.org) with its headquarters in Los Baños, Laguna in the Philippines. IRRI aims to reduce poverty and hunger, improve the health of rice farmers and consumers, and ensure environmental sustainability of rice farming.
Key responsibilities
1.1. Purpose
Provide technical support in the day-to-day running of field experiments
Assist researchers in collecting and processing data from the field
Make sure the entries in trials are properly labelled and record kept in field books.
Fill data sheets and submit data to the researcher for further processing
1.2. Engagement
Engage effectively with field laborers, irrigation scheme officers/managers, KALRO researchers and other stakeholders as needed.
Inform the immediate supervisor on the condition and status of field trials
Effectively communicate with immediate supervisors and daily laborers to ensure delivery of research objectives
1.3. Delivery
In conjunction with the researcher and scientist, plan, survey and coordinate the materials and resources required to meet the research objectives of the group
Help collect and store data generated from the trials and provide information regarding the status of trials to ensure continuity and quality of field research
Clean and maintain the research fields
Perform any other relevant duties as assigned by supervisor from time to time
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in agriculture or related field
Minimum 1 year of relevant work experience
Knowledgeable in setting up field trials
Knowledge of field data collection and labelling entries using a bar code
Experience with field data collection, sample processing and archiving
An understanding of health and safety in the workplace and good working practices
Ability to work autonomously with minimal supervision
Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
Good communication skills
Willingness to learn and continually develop skills
Post location: The position will be based in Ahero, Kenya.
Terms of Appointment This position is at job level HG 10. The position is 1.6 years contract, renewable subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding. ILRI offers a competitive salary and benefits package which includes; pension, medical and other insurances
